Unemployment: A Blessing in Disguise
Houston, Texas – June 7, 2011 ― As reported this year by USA TODAY*, seven in 10 polled have been unemployed for more than six months. Author T. N. Jenkins also experienced the downward spiral of unemployment. Then she applied for a job that, six months before, she would have been found unthinkable. She decided to work in South Korea.
An MSNBC.com* contributor observes that “with an anemic job market in the United States, many are looking beyond our shores to find employment.” However, though Jenkins was prompted by the basic need to provide for herself, while overseas, she found inspiration to follow her dreams and publish her book, Everhome: Birth of the Gilded Hand. “About 2 years earlier, I was inspired to write a book. I kept writing, against my better judgment, all throughout my unemployment.”
The USA TODAY/Gallup Poll also uncovered that one in five unemployed “are so discouraged that they no longer are actively looking for work.” But Jenkins hopes to inspire others with her personal story and her book. “It doesn't seem, at first, that a fantasy can speak to the realities of life, but I wrote it while I was going through an experience that many people in the unemployed world can relate to,” says Jenkins. “It's about how one person can make a difference, even when faced with an uncertain future.”
Already, Jenkins is seeing the positive effect of her book on its readers, as her small group of fans post their reviews on Amazon.com and send their reflections to her website and Facebook page. According to Jenkins, Everhome's story highlights the impact of one person in a community of people ready for change. It is also the journey of making friends while becoming an individual.
“People find self-worth in their jobs,” says Jenkins “But you don't have to go overseas to find self-worth. Self-worth starts with the individual wherever you are.”
